Behind its beautifully retained late-1800s façade, this freestanding two bedroom Victorian cottage has been comprehensively reimagined by Bryant Alsop Architects, bringing a remarkable new dimension to a home that remains entirely at ease with its period streetscape. Recently renovated, the transformation retains the original front rooms and verandah before unfolding into a sophisticated contemporary interior shaped by natural light, warm materials and a seamless relationship with the rear garden.

Two beautifully proportioned bedrooms occupy the original front of the home, preserving its Victorian scale and simplicity. Beyond, a stylish central bathroom, separate powder room and dedicated laundry mark the transition from the original cottage to the architectural addition.

At the rear, the house opens dramatically into an expansive living, dining and kitchen domain, where timber-lined ceilings and cabinetry bring warmth and texture to a crisp contemporary palette. The beautifully resolved kitchen centres around a generous island, with extensive storage and a full suite of new appliances, while the spacious living room gives the home a sense of volume rarely expected from its traditional façade. A dedicated north facing dining zone, integrated desk and bar further extend the versatility of the space.

High-level glazing and electrically operated ceiling windows draw daylight deep into the interior, while broad openings connect the living spaces with the private north facing courtyard beyond. Established planting softens the boundaries, creating an intimate outdoor setting for dining and entertaining.

The transformation reaches well beyond what is immediately visible. The original brick walls have been retained while the structure has been underpinned on a concrete slab, complemented by a new roof and guttering, double-glazed windows and doors, zoned reverse-cycle heating and cooling, solar panels with Tesla battery, rainwater storage servicing the toilets and garden irrigation, security cameras and NBN connectivity. On-demand gas hot water, a gas barbecue outlet and a single-key locking system add further thought to the detail.

Beatty Avenue village, Toorak Cellars and an excellent collection of cafes and restaurants are moments away, while Toorak Station and Malvern Road trams place the wider city within easy reach.

A beautifully resolved meeting of Victorian architecture and contemporary design, this is a home whose modest period façade gives little indication of the space and sophistication that unfolds beyond.
