With a rich and colourful history, a distinctive architectural presence and an exceptional contemporary transformation, this remarkable corner residence offers a rare combination of heritage character, generous family living and an enviable city-edge location.

Originally a gold rush-era pub, later Mr Malouf’s store and even a playhouse for a young Barry Humphries, the building has played many roles in Carlton’s evolving story. Today, a considered renovation by award-winning architect Karen Alcock of MA+Co has transformed it into a sophisticated family home, retaining the character and individuality of the original building while introducing light, space and contemporary comfort.

Occupying the chamfered corner of Faraday and Barkly Streets, the home enjoys abundant northern light, leafy streetscape outlooks and unexpected views towards the Melbourne skyline. Behind its distinctive heritage façade, a series of beautifully proportioned rooms creates a flexible arrangement of formal and informal living spaces, equally suited to family life, entertaining and working from home.

The ground floor opens to elegant adjoining living and dining rooms, with high ceilings, polished hardwood floors, plantation shutters and outlooks to the surrounding streets. A separate fireside lounge offers a more intimate retreat, while a versatile studio, home office or additional bedroom benefits from independent external access and an adjoining bathroom with marble detailing.

At the heart of the home, a generous kitchen and informal dining area connect seamlessly to a private landscaped courtyard through expansive steel-framed bifold doors. Sheltered by high walls and surrounded by greenery, this outdoor space provides a peaceful setting for entertaining or everyday relaxation. The kitchen combines refined materials with professional-quality appliances, including a Wolf range cooker and commercial rangehood, integrated Liebherr refrigeration, Miele dishwasher, stainless-steel workbench and marble-topped island. Built-in banquette seating creates an inviting and informal gathering place.

A full laundry/butlers pantry servicing the formal dining room. Upstairs, a second living area offers a light-filled and peaceful retreat, with full-height glazing and French doors opening onto a terrace with city skyline views. Two distinctive bedrooms and a family bathroom provide generous accommodation, including a bedroom with built-in robes and another with a loft bed and integrated study space.

The parent’s retreat is particularly special, enjoying natural light and outlooks on three sides, including views towards the CBD. A fitted study nook, extensive built-in storage, walk-in robe and beautifully detailed ensuite with twin basins, a separate bath and fluted-glass partitions create a comfortable and private retreat.

Throughout the home, contemporary amenities have been carefully integrated without compromising its architectural character. Features include double glazing, hydronic heating, ducted heating and cooling to the main bedroom and kitchen, security, extensive storage and a full-sized laundry. Beneath the house, a substantial bluestone cellar provides both practical space and a tangible connection to the building’s past and roof storage mean you will never be lost for space.

Located in one of Carlton’s most desirable neighbourhoods, the property is moments from Carlton Gardens, the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne University and the vibrant cafés, restaurants and shops of Lygon and Brunswick Streets. Excellent public transport, schools, hospitals and the Queen Victoria Market are all within easy reach. It is also within the catchment for University High.

A home of genuine character and individuality, 40-48 Faraday Street offers something increasingly rare: the history and soul of old Carlton, thoughtfully reimagined for the way we live today.
