“OSBORNE HOUSE” – significant on so many levels, this remarkable residence has enjoyed a number of iterations over its lifetime and now stands ready and waiting for a new story to begin.

Assembled in 1854, it is not only one of North Melbourne’s oldest homes, but one of its rarest being one of the few surviving examples in Melbourne of pre-cut imported timber construction. Simple in style, Osborne House reflects the austerity of Melbourne in the mid-1800s, as well as being the only surviving building associated with its original owner, George Ward Cole, a successful ship owner who would eventually become a member of Victoria’s Legislative Council. Set on a large allotment of approximately 532sqm, the home itself currently comprises three large bedrooms all serviced by two bathrooms and a study. Add to this a formal lounge and adjoining dining room, separate living room and functional kitchen/meals area. The central staircase continues up to an attic-style third level where a further two bedrooms are located – originally the maids’ quarters. Complementing the fascinating interior is a large north-facing backyard with central water feature and established fruit trees providing the backdrop for many a family occasion, plus off-street parking option via Blair Place behind and additional two-car front off-street parking.

Errol Street’s cafes, bars and retail are just around the corner, while city-bound trams and the open spaces of Eades Park are close by. Queen Victoria Market, Flagstaff Gardens, popular schools including the University High School (zone), and Parkville’s hospital and university precincts are all within easy reach. With a tram stop almost at the front gate and the CBD an easy walk away, the location delivers an enviable inner-city lifestyle.
