Occasionally, a house seems inseparable from its setting.

Jindivick is one of those - the former Post Office, now a beautifully resolved home within established gardens, framed by mature specimen trees and surrounded by farmland in a remarkably picturesque village, an hour and twenty minutes from Melbourne.

The relationship between house and place is felt throughout. Views run in every direction, filtered through the garden - the village held beyond the trees, pasture opening past it, with Mount Baw Baw and the surrounding ranges forming the backdrop.

To the west the garden gives way to paddocks and open farmland. Big skies and changing light bring atmospheric movement and variation, while the surrounding farmland, held in large parcels, reserves an unusual sense of expanse and privacy.

Jindivick has been carefully renewed, retaining the character of the former Post Office and milk bar while creating interiors that feel considered and contemporary.

It served the village for decades, and the original shop front is now a generous main living space, the Jindivick signage still above the double doors. Its own street entrance suggests other possibilities-a studio, perhaps, or a place to work.

Original Victorian ash floorboards, high ceilings and distinctive reglazed steel-framed windows bring texture and depth.

A second living space, an eat-in kitchen, a light-filled sunroom or study and three bedrooms sit within a flexible plan where spaces can change purpose over time - space to gather, space to work, space to withdraw, and space to do nothing at all.

The gardens unfold around the house as a succession of outdoor spaces - quiet corners, productive beds, places for long lunches and open lawn - some enclosed and intimate, others opening to the landscape beyond. Changing in colour, light and character through the seasons, they feel established rather than arranged, having grown around the rhythms of life between house and garden.

Jindivick has retained much of its original village streetscape, and daily life continues at an unhurried scale.

It is a place that attracts makers and gardeners: a sculpture garden, a country market, and Broughton Hall - one of Australia's best-known gardens.

Directly across the road, the heritage-protected Palmer House is home to Atticus Health's medical and allied health services and the Post Office, its Victorian-style gardens designed by David Musker - with the primary school, church and memorial garden close by.

It is this quiet closeness to community that makes the sense of retreat here so unusual.

A place to retreat. A place to belong. A place to return to.
