Set in an iconic block on prestigious St Kilda Hill, this oversized apartment brings together a hint of Art Deco, a touch of old New York and a superb renovation. A secure entry leads into a wood-panelled foyer with a beautiful timber staircase, and that sense of grand occasion carries straight through your front door. Expect lofty decorative ceilings, polished floorboards and attention to detail that goes well beyond the usual update.

Double doors open into the living and dining room, where light spills across the boards from a second set of French doors framing the treetops outside. The gas fireplace with its carved timber mantel gives the room an easy focal point. Step outside and the covered balcony becomes a true outdoor room, sheltered from the weather and wrapped in the leafy canopy of the street.

The separate kitchen shows just how much thought has gone into the makeover. Pale granite benchtops sit above deep charcoal cabinetry, with white overhead cupboards reaching up towards the ceiling, brass-toned handles and a hexagonal tiled splashback. An exposed-brick recess adds texture above the long preparation bench, while a black freestanding cooker makes a striking centrepiece.

The enormous bedroom is a revelation. A bay of timber-framed windows dressed in plantation shutters lets the sunshine in on your terms. A full wall of built-in robes handles even the most ambitious wardrobe, and there's still room for a desk, a reading chair and more besides. The bathroom is wrapped floor to ceiling in large marble-look tiles, a floating vanity and a rain shower and handheld fittings behind frameless glass. Split-system heating and cooling keeps it all comfortable year-round.

Albert Park Lake sets the scene for a sunrise loop, the beach and foreshore are there for warm afternoons, and Fitzroy Street puts restaurants, bars and cafés at your door. With the light rail and St Kilda Road trams moments away, there's plenty to draw you out. Coming home might be the best part.
